Topics and Readings for Small Group Discussion

A series of online educational resources for health sciences faculty and students is in development. As an "electronic filing cabinet," the resources will provide Academic Health Center faculty with a variety of materials that can be integrated into lectures and provide online learning for students and small group discussion about topics related to complementary and alternative therapies.

The Complementary and Alternative Therapies Electronic File Cabinet is divided into four main "drawers," or resource sections:

(General Resources)

These educational materials are organized into separate file folders according to specific CAM systems and approaches (for example, Oriental Medicine, Botanical Therapies, Rolfing, etc.). Each folder contains a variety of materials about the specific CA/T approach for use by faculty in their courses. For example: Background and Overview of the Approach, Evidence Base, Patient Scenarios, Resource List, etc. Text, graphics and photos are provided to incorporate into various types of presentations.

The "mini-courses" in this section of the file cabinet are self-study learning programs that can be provided to students online. In addition to learning activities about each topic, each module contains interactive activities, such as small group discussions (online or in-class), quizzes and links to online resources. Modules require between one to three hours to complete. These modules will soon be available: Spirituality: Culture, Faith Traditions, and Health; Botanical Medicines; and Introduction to Complementary and Alternative Therapies.

This drawer enables you to enter a virtual clinic containing case studies that reflect an integrated care model in which both biomedical and complementary approaches are used. Case studies illustrate the application of individual conventional and complementary systems or approaches for individual patients, as well as care plans exemplifying an integrated approach. Case studies in this section can be assigned for students to consider how integrated treatment plans can be developed for a variety of patients.
