Application Procedures


Health Coaching Track

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  You must be a health care professional or currently enrolled in a health professional graduate program.  A minimum of a completed bachelors degree in a health or health-related field (including, but not limited to medicine, nursing, psychology, nutrition, traditional Chinese medicine, chiropractic medicine, naturopathic medicine, pharmacy, social work, public health, healthcare administration) with a GPA of 3.0 is mandatory.

For detailed application procedures, select one of the following:
I am a current U of M health professions student.
I am accepted in the Certificate in Complementary Therapies & Healing Practices.
I am not currently enrolled in a U of M graduate program.

 

Important Application Deadlines

  • June 15th for fall admission

  • Oct 15th for spring admission

  • March 15th for summer admission

 I.  Current UMN Health Professions student.

Discuss program with your academic advisor.  Written permission must be granted by existing program director to be permitted to work concomitantly on this certificate program.

  1. Complete Graduate School online application at  http://www.grad.umn.edu/prospective_students/apply_online.html . If you are already admitted to the Graduate School complete a "Change of Status/Readmission application. See  http://www.grad.umn.edu/current_students/registration/readmission.html for the form and filing procedures/deadlines. On the form, be sure to check "additional major/concurrent with present major".  When complete, the Graduate School will forward your application to the Center for Spirituality and Healing (CSH) for review. 
  2. Submit the following materials directly to the CSH*:
  • Three letters of support.  At least one letter should be from an academic source and one from an employer/supervisor. (If not currently admitted to the Graduate School.)
  • Current CV or vocational history to include a chronological listing of positions held as well as a brief statement about your current employment.  Be sure to include relevant volunteer work.
  •  A 2-5 page personal statement focusing on what led you to your current and future interest in health coaching as a professional activity.
  •  A 1-2 page description of interest in and experience with holistic or    integrative health and healing (including alternative or complementary  healthcare) in your own life, and how it has led to your interest in  doing this professionally.
  1. You will receive a letter from the Center acknowledging receipt of your application.  If you are missing any required documents, they will be mentioned in the letter.
  2. Call or e-mail Carla Mantel at 612-624-5166 or cmantel@umn.edu to arrange an in-person admission interview with program faculty.
  3. The reviewed application is returned to the Graduate School for final approval.
  4. The Graduate School notifies you of their admission decision.
  5. If approved by the program director, students may contact Carla Mantel at cmantel@umn.edu or 612-624-5166 to receive permission to register for the first course prior to official admittance by the Graduate School.  Register for courses at http://onestop.umn.edu/onestop/registration.html.

II. UMN Students Already Accepted in the Certificate in Complementary Therapies and Healing Practices Program

  1. Contact Karen Lawson, MD, Director of Health Coaching at lawsonk@umn.edu  or (612) 624-9457, or Carla Mantel at 612-624-5166 to discuss the program.
  2. After acceptance by the program director, complete a "Change of Status/Readmission application. See  http://www.grad.umn.edu/current_students/registration/readmission.html for the form and filing procedures/deadlines. On the form, be sure to check "additional major/concurrent with present major".
  3. Submit the following materials directly to the CSH*:

III. Students or Professionals not currently enrolled at UMN
