Brief Biography
Dr. Annie Heiderscheit is a board certified music therapist and has 17 years of clinical experience. She holds a masters degree in counseling from Iowa State University and is a doctorate in music/music therapy from the University of Minnesota. Annie also has advanced training in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music and in music psychotherapy from Temple University. She is also trained in Neurological Music Therapy through Colorado State University. She is currently the interim director of the music therapy program at the University of Minnesota and an affiliate faculty member in the Center for Spirituality and Healing in the Academic Health Center at the University. Dr. Heiderscheit is actively conducting research exploring the use of music to reduce pain and anxiety in patients that are mechanically ventilated and also using music to reduce stress and anxiety during mealtimes for patients with eating disorders. She also maintains a clinical practice at Methodist Hospital in the Eating Disorder Institute in the in patient, partial and residential programs. Annie also maintains a private practice which currently employs of five music therapists, providing music therapy services to clients of a wide array throughout the metro area. Dr. Heiderscheit continues work on a 4 year NIH funded research study exploring the use of music as a non-pharmacological treatment for mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU. She is collaborating with a multidisciplinary team from the University. Annie also has two book chapters soon to be published in 2008. These are entitled: Songs, Music and Sobriety: The Use of Music Therapy in Substance Abuse Treatment and Discovery and recovery through music: An overview of music therapy with adults in eating disorder treatment. In 2007, Annie was selected by Remo, Inc. to become an endorsed facilitator of HealthRhythms Empowerment Drumming.
