The Retreat Series is designed to intentionally cultivate the innate strengths of the healer. In a natural setting, each retreat will help participants to develop a stronger sense of purpose and presence, passion for life's work, compassion, calmness, mindfulness, listening and open-heartedness. As cohorts who come together seasonally to support and enrich one another, you will rediscover your purpose, spirit and life's work.

The rhythm of each retreat will include cycles of activity and rest, community and solitude. There will be time for personal reflection and communing with others who share your desire for a renewed sense of purpose. The retreats are held at several retreat centers and offer participants the unique opportunity to explore and reflect in surrounding woods.

Henry Emmons, M.D.
Psychiatrist Henry Emmons uses mind-body techniques and alternative therapies in his clinical practice, and is a program leader for The Inner Life Renewal program weekend and day retreats. He is a recognized lecturer on such topics as psychopharmacology, natural therapies for depression, mindfulness meditation and health realization in medicine, resilience training and the evolution from clinician to healer.

Henry earned his medical degree at the University of Iowa in 1985, and completed a Bush Fellowship in the integration of natural and alternative therapies in psychiatry and training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction with Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. He serves as consultant to organizations in the Twin Cities and is a faculty member at the Center for Spirituality and Healing.  His first book, The Chemistry of Joy: A Three-Step Program for Overcoming Depression Through Western Science and Eastern Wisdom, will be published in January 2006.  In this book he weaves together neuroscience, Ayurvedic healing practices and the psychology of mindfulness to create a personalized and truly holistic program for healing one of the most common and disabling of conditions.

Mary Catherine Casey, M. Div.
Mary Catherine Casey is a member of the Inner Life Renewal program team.  She recently moved to New Mexico where she is a hospice chaplain. Her self-described role is to help patients and their families give voice and meaning to cancer as it shapes their lives through listening, imagery, prayer and ritual.

Mary Catherine earned her Master's of Divinity from the Harvard Divinity School in 1995 and completed her undergraduate degree in social work and sociology at Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa. She is a frequent lecturer on mind/body/spirit at end of life as well as spirituality in clinical care.

Laura Kinkead, M.B.A.

Laura is a health care consultant and a member of the team that created and introduced the Inner Life Renewal program. She earned her masters in business administration from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, and has held leadership positions in hospitals, clinics and health plans. Most recently, she worked at Minneapolis-based Allina Hospital and Clinics as part of its executive team. In these capacities, she witnessed and experienced the day-to-day stresses and challenges that come with working in a demanding and complex environment.

Her involvement with the Inner Life Renewal programs grew from her desire to provide opportunities for health professionals to rekindle and reconnect with their passion and life purpose, and to develop strategies to maintain their spirit in the face of great pressure.
