Application Procedures

Health Coaching Certificate Track

Minimum Requirements: You must be either a healthcare professional, currently enrolled in a health professional graduate program, a board-certified chaplain with three years in a health care setting, or have a non-health care bachelor’s degree with experience in a health related area. A minimum of a completed bachelors degree (including, but not limited to medicine, nursing, psychology, nutrition, Traditional Chinese Medicine, chiropractic medicine, naturopathic medicine, pharmacy, social work, public health, healthcare administration) with a GPA of 3.0 is mandatory.

 

Important Application Deadlines for Fall 2012:

  • June 15th for Fall admission (summer intensive classes may be taken as a non-degree student for those planning fall admission)

 

Application Instructions
  1. Contact program director Karen Lawson, MD, at lawsonk@umn.edu or 612-624-9457, or Carla Mantel at cmantel@umn.edu or 612-624-5166, to discuss the program.
  2. Complete Graduate School online application at: http://www.grad.umn.edu/prospective_students/apply_online.html. If you have ever been admitted to the Graduate School, complete a “Change of Status/Readmission” application. Click here for form and filing procedures/deadlines: http://www.grad.umn.edu/current_students/registration/readmission.html. On the form, be sure to check  “additional major/concurrent with present major.” When complete, the Graduate School will forward your application to the Center for Spirituality & Healing (CSH) for review.
    1. Upload the following to the Graduate School application under the "Personal Statements" section

                                                               i.      Current CV or vocational history including a chronological listing of positions held as well as a brief statement about your current employment. Be sure to include relevant volunteer work.

                                                             ii.      A three-five page personal statement focusing on what led to your interest in health coaching as a professional activity, and a description of your interest in and experience with holistic integrative health and healing. Please include a statement about what hopes and expectations you have of the Health Coaching Certificate Track.

    1. Use the online application to indicate the names and emails of three recommendors.  An automated email will be sent to each asking that they fill out an evaluation form and upload a letter of recommendation.

                                                               i.      Letters should be from people who know you in a professional capacity.  At least one letter should be from an academic source if possible and one from an employer/supervisor.

    1. You will receive an email from the Graduate School Admissions office confirming receipt of your application. If you are missing any required documentation, this will be addressed in the response.
  1. Contact Carla Mantel at cmantel@umn.edu or 612-624-5166 to arrange an in-person or telephone admission interview with program faculty. Usually, one informational/preliminary interview with the program director occurs first. Once your personal statement has been received, a second interview with another faculty member will be arranged. The reviewed application is returned to the Graduate School for final approval.
  2. After the application is reviewed by the Center faculty admissions committee, it is returned to the Graduate School for final approval.
  3. The Graduate School notifies you directly of their admission decision.
