Potential Students

Any healthcare professional with at least an associate’s degree or equivalent. Appropriate for those with graduate and professional degrees as well.

Requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a healthcare related field. Many students already have graduate or professional degrees. 

Desired Outcomes

Increased understanding of basic principles and practices of Health Coaching, familiarity with common vocabulary and some basic skills. This is useful for individuals who wish to incorporate such approaches and tools into existing clinical practices; or who are involved with leading efforts to bring Health Coaching into new practice environments.

Individuals will acquire both the understanding of core principles and practices of Health Coaching from a holistic and integrative perspective, and the confidence and comfort that comes from extensive practice and clinical supervision. Graduates will be well prepared to practice in a wide variety of settings as health coaches.

Length and structure

Two segments —Essentials I and II. Each is 60 hours of contact offered in two 4-day weekends, with web and phone support, spread over a 4 month period of time.  Total of 120 hours available.

Program consists of 18 credits, spanning a minimum of 4 semesters (approx. 2 years) 14 credits specific to health coaching, 4 credits general content in complementary therapies and healing practices.

Application process

Participants fill out a simple application and registration form on-line, requiring a brief personal statement

Formal application process through UMN Graduate School, requiring complete transcripts, personal statement, and letters of recommendation.

Application Deadlines

Sept. 8, 2009 for Essentials I.

Accepted year round, but June 15 is the final deadline for fall admission.

Sept.- Dec. 
Essentials II offered Jan.-May. Meeting dates for 2009/2010 are 10/1-4; 11/12-15; 2/18-21; 4/15-18.

A new cohort is admitted annually and begins in early September; however, there is opportunity to take a couple of basic classes in June prior to beginning Health Coaching curriculum. Class meets for two 4-day weekends/ semester, with the weekly content and assignments done via phone and web.

Cost and payment

Each segment is $3,000. Pre-registration for both segments at the same time receives a $500 discount.

Tuition costs vary each semester and between categories of students. (Approximate cost for the 18 credits as of 2009 is $18.000. This covers 360 hours of course work.)

Upon completion you receive…

Documentation for continuing education units. Formal CME accreditation is not yet available.
