Summary
There is a substantial body of research supporting the use
of meditation for a wide variety of conditions. This section
focused on research showing the benefits of meditation for
patients with chronic pain, hypertension, anxiety, and generalized
stress.
Outcome measures used in research include heart rate, blood
pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen consumption, skin conductance,
EEG and EMG recordings, scores on anxiety, depression and
mood scales, insomnia and subjective reports of quality of
life and overall well-being.
In addition, there is increased interest in neurobiologic
and immune system changes.
