Summary
Meditation involves some form of concentration in order to
overcome the habitual activity of the mind. With most types
of meditation, this focusing of attention is undertaken for
a purpose. These purposes vary and include improving personal
well-being, gaining insight, or experiencing union with God.
Some common focusing techniques are: mental repetition, physical
repetition, problem concentration, and visual concentration.
Some types of meditation that have been researched for health
benefits are the relaxation response, transcendental meditation,
mindfulness-based stress reduction, and centering prayer.
