Yogis believe that hatha yoga stabilizes and balances the prana (life force) in the body.

From a Western point of view, yoga's ability to reduce stress may come partly from its elicitation of the relaxation response. Other factors contributing to this are the placebo response and social support.

However, rather than having a single dominant mode of action, yoga is likely to work via dozens of different mechanisms simultaneously and some of them may work together synergistically.
