Regulation Throughout the World
Regulation of botanical and folk remedies varies greatly
around the world.
- In developing nations, it is estimated that at least 80
% of the population uses some form of folk or plant remedies
without any regulation.
- In contrast, Canada and many of the European union countries
either have, or are developing, comprehensive approaches
to the regulation of botanical medicines.
- Regulation in the United States is less stringent than
in Europe. But the U.S. does apply different regulatory
criteria for the marketing and sale of botanical medicines
and other dietary supplements than it does to pharmaceuticals,
as you will see in the next screens
