Training and Regulation

Osteopathic medical school is a 4-year training program (as is MD training), followed by an internship and usually a residency. There are state, national, and specialty licensing and examination requirements. US-trained and licensed DOs practice in all medical specialties.

In the United States there is strict regulation of Osteopathic medicine. The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) is the primary certifying body for DOs and is the accrediting agency for all osteopathic medical colleges and healthcare facilities. There are 18 certifying boards under their jurisdiction.
