As a free-nation, we respect the right of individuals
to make personal choices about their lives, which
must include their medical care. You should act as
an advisor and advocate helping your patients make
informed decisions.
To begin, you have a responsibility to protect patients.
We know that some complementary approaches have risks
of interacting with conventional prescriptions in
confounding, possibly toxic, ways, and we need to
warn patients of these risks.
We must simultaneously acknowledge that these same
approaches can bring comfort and relief in treating
conditions that conventional treatments fail to help.
Where the complementary therapy offers documented
benefits, you should promote it. Otherwise, if the
patient chooses it, and there is no risk, permit the
use.
