Basis of Understanding

The constant interplay between yin and yang Qi creates change. Moreover, it creates particular patterns of change, called zheng.

When yin and yang are in harmony, the pattern of change (zheng) is moderate and predictable, which makes it easier for living beings to adapt and so maintain health.

But disharmonies of yin and yang result in a distortion of the expected pattern. Change is then sudden and immoderate, and it is difficult for living beings to respond appropriately. This can result in illness and death.

In TCM, the ability to understand the dynamics of yin and yang is extremely valuable because it helps the practitioner understand and predict patterns of change, and, more importantly, respond to change so as to preserve harmony and prevent illness, or if necessary, safely and effectively treat an illness.
