The University of Minnesota’s Earl E. Bakken Center for Spirituality & Healing and the YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities are teaming up on a study to help these adults enhance their health and wellbeing so they can live their best lives. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the study focuses on developing and testing a new educational program called Mindful Movement which aims to help adults ages 50 and up overcome barriers to exercise, and gain the skills and motivation to improve their wellbeing.

“Many people have strong inner critics,” says Center mindfulness teacher Jean Fagerstrom. “We think [self-criticism] is a good way to motivate ourselves. But the truth is we function better and happier if we learn to be kind to ourselves.” Not only that, but we’re more successful when we forgive ourselves our inevitable human failings, she says. “Research shows that kind people are more resilient and persistent in the face of setbacks.”

As I reflect on our current culture and what behavior is considered status quo, I intuitively sense that as an American culture we are overstimulated, undernourished, and disconnected from our deeper lives. I recently heard that in the leading technology country of South Korea, one of the newest forms of rehabilitation centers popping up all over is technology addiction centers. And it leaves me as a health coach reflecting on the many types of nourishment that we tend to overlook as we stay responsive to the constant external stimulation and distraction of our current society. This article is my health coach remedy for the epidemic we face.

In our world today, we are inundated by information. We pay professionals for advice, direction, and interventions. Physicians, nurses, nutritionists, and health professionals of all kinds give us treatments, directions and sometimes threats. The same is true of our financial advisers, accountants, personal trainers, marriage and family therapists, lawyers, etc. Despite all of this expert advice, we find it difficult to make the changes in our lives that we say we want to make. If we do make changes, we struggle to sustain them. Information alone does not lead to shifts in perspectives or actions. That is where coaching comes in.

Nature-based therapies bring kids outside to interact with nature while virtual reality therapy uses technology to help them experience nature from within the hospital. Nature-based therapy isn’t always accessible for patients with compromised immune systems, limited mobility or other medical issues that prevent them from leaving the hospital. In those instances, virtual reality can provide “the next best thing.”

Ten University of Minnesota integrative health and wellbeing coaching students presented their final capstone projects on Dec. 8, 2017. The health coaching program, which is offered by the University’s Earl E. Bakken Center for Spirituality & Healing, requires that students complete a professional case report as a capstone project to earn a master of arts degree in integrative health and wellbeing coaching.

The click-clack of knives chopping on cutting boards and the savory smell of sauteed onions filled the air on a recent evening. Eight students from the University of Minnesota training to be doctors, nurses and counselors raced around the classroom, donning aprons instead of lab coats. Their assignment: Prepare a delicious, healthful meal to treat patients’ specific health problems.
